On February 18, 2007, people all around the world welcomed the year of the Fire Pig in Chinese astrology. Naturally, people have some questions, such as:
Why is Chinese New Year celebrated on February 18, 2007 instead of February 1, 2007?
The Chinese base their New Year celebration on the lunar calendar instead of the solar one used in the West. Therefore, people who follow the solar calendar always celebrate the New Year on January 1st. But the Chinese New Year will depend on the moon. Usually it is celebrated in February, yet the exact day will vary from year to year. This year just happens to be on February 18, 2007.

The year of the Fire Pig began about a week ago on February 18, 2007 according to Chinese astrology. In China this year, many people do seem to agree that it is definitely the element year of Fire. In Chinese astrology, not only are there 12 animals in the zodiac, but there are also 5 elements: wood, earth, metal, water, and fire. The animals in the Chinese zodiac rotate every year from the year of the Dog last year to the Pig this year and the Rat next year. And the elements in the Chinese zodiac rotate in 12 year cycles. So this year is the Fire Pig because it is the last year in the Fire cycle. However, the Fire element seems to be really heating up not only Chinese New Year celebrations but even the temperatures in usually cold places like Beijing and Harbin, China.
